Umbraco 16 is Coming: Here's What Your Need to Know

In Kyle Brigham's latest video, he breaks down what’s new: the sleek Tiptap editor, property-level permissions, built-in segment support, smarter webhook payloads, and a much smoother editing experience.

Hey there! Kyle here from Marcel Digital, your friendly neighborhood Umbraco enthusiast.

Big news: the wait is almost over! Cue the drumroll... or just a really enthusiastic desk tap. 🎉 Umbraco 16 is launching June 12th, 2025 – and it's packed with thoughtful updates that build on the solid awesomeness of Umbraco 14 and 15. Let’s dig into what’s new (and what’s going to make your dev life a little easier and a lot more fun).

What’s New in Umbraco 16?
While it’s technically a major release, Umbraco 16 is more like a thoughtful glow-up than a total makeover. Think of it as your favorite jeans getting a few new pockets. Editors and developers rejoice – and breathe easy – because there's no new .NET version to wrestle with. Your coffee can stay in the mug.

Goodbye TinyMCE, Hello Tiptap
It’s time to say farewell to our old pal TinyMCE. It’s not you, TinyMCE... okay, maybe it is you. Taking the stage is Tiptap – a sleek, modern rich text editor that’s basically the editor upgrade your content didn’t know it needed. Good news: your existing data types will migrate automatically. Slightly-less-good-but-still-pretty-okay news: you might need to tweak some toolbar and config settings. And if you’re the sentimental type and still want TinyMCE, there’s a third-party package from to keep the magic alive.

Enhanced Editor Experience & Property-Level Permissions
All the great updates they made in v15 - like clipboard functionality for blocks, drag and drop media, and more robust validation - will still be available in v16. The editing experience continues to get a lot less “where’s that button again?” and more “hey, this is kinda fun.”
Oh, and property-level permissions are here! Now you can decide exactly who gets to touch what. No more “who deleted the homepage header?!” moments. Micromanagers, this one’s for you.

Segment Support
Ever wanted to show different content to different users? Now you can! Segment support is built in, laying the groundwork for personalization and A/B testing. It’s like giving your content a wardrobe for every occasion.

Webhook Payloads – Now with Options!
Webhook payloads just got smarter – and lighter if you want. Choose between Minimal, Extended, or Legacy payloads depending on how much data you want to sling around. Plus, all dependencies are fully upgraded, which is code for “it runs better, smoother, and faster.”
That’s your sneak peek at Umbraco 16!

At Marcel Digital, we’re pumped to help you get the most out of these new features. Need help planning your upgrade? Want to chat about segment strategies or setting up Tiptap like a pro? You know where to find us.

June 12th – mark your calendars. Or your forearm. We won’t judge. Happy upgrading!
